High School baseball players may often wonder what the benefit is between attending a Junior College or moving straight to a larger NCAA school. The answer really lies within each individual player and their ultimate goal.
For a player like Oakton Junior College’s, Tyler Palmer, a Junior College was the best route. After being drafted and then suffering a major injury to his throwing arm, the Midwestern Junior College route gave him the extra time to heal and prepare for his season.
Other individuals such as Derek DeYoung, who is also a current member on the Oakton Junior College roster, chose the Juco route out of high school in order to give him more time to develop as a player.
DeYoung (Plainfield, IL) was a 2010 USSSA World Championship stand-out. As an All-State player, he completed his final 2 years with a 2.50 ERA and 23 homeruns. He saw tremendous growth in himself his final 2 years, and felt that another couple years would only allow him to develop that much more, hence his reasoning for going the JuCo route.
Following a dominant freshman year at Oakton Junior College, which included a 3.05 ERA and 50 strikeouts, Derek was named to the All-Conference Team in the powerhouse Skyway Conference, and he has since been the talk amongst numerous scouts. He has kept the momentum going thus far this season. In the past two weeks he has amassed three saves and nearly 20 punch outs.
Just recently, DeYoung reached the next step in his baseball career. He committed to Lynn University in Boca Raton FL, a NCAA DII powerhouse. Lynn University hopes to see quality innings out of this right hander who commands a fastball that has been registered up to 94 MPH with a tight curveball.
DeYoung was recruited by major D1 programs such as Coastal Carolina, Central Florida, High Point, and West Virginia but finally fell in love with Lynn because of, “weather, location, and program.” Nestled in south Florida he looks forward to enjoying the year round heat as well as being in a calmer social region. One of the most crucial factors was due to the success of the program, currently standing in the #12 spot in NCAA rankings and a perennial World Series competitor.
The Amateur Baseball Report is very excited at the prospect of DeYoung’s name being announced in the 2012 MLB draft.
ABR asked Derek on his advice to kids who are indecisive on going to a four year out of high school or choosing the Junior College route. “I definitely recommend junior college, it gives you more time to develop so you can move onto a better school.”
ABR wishes Derek the best of luck as he moves onto the next step in his baseball career
