With camps beginning in 2008, 2011 marked the first actual year where the majority of ABR participants would be eligible for the draft. However, there were a few ABR alumni eligible in 2010. Alumni Brandon Mims (Astros 9th round), Luis Benitez Ortiz (Blue Jays 31st round), Chris Lee (White Sox 37th round), and Kenny Diaz (Astros 49th round) were each taken in the 2010 MLB Draft.
In 2011, the ABR stock rose dramatically with two alumni taken in the first round and a total of nineteen players taken over all. Some of the namely players were Dante Bichette (Yankees 1st round), Kevin Comer (Blue Jays 1st round), and Dan Vogelbach (Cubs 2nd round). Taking a minute to look back, the Amateur Baseball Report is proud to have seen and been a small part of these young ball players’ lives.
Taking the same momentum as 2011 and bringing it into 2012, ABR alumni are red hot in the draft. The 1st overall pick was USSSA standout and member of FTB Mizuno, Carlos Correa. Four other ABR alumni would soon follow.
Addison Russell was the next ABR alumni to go. He went to the Oakland Athletics and was the 11th overall pick. Russell was a USSSA World Championship star and also is a member of FTB Mizuno. The 32nd overall pick to the Twins was 2010 ABR Player of the Year Orlando “Jose” Berrios. Jesse Winker was taken 49th overall by the Reds. Winker was 2009 USSSA All-American selected by ABR, and a 2010 USSSA National Team member. Rounding out Day One was Walker Weickel who was also a 2009 USSSA All-American and 2010 USSSA National Team Member. Weickel was taken 55th overall by the San Diego Padres.
Congratulations to the entire first round draft picks and stay tuned for more draft coverage and hopefully more good news for ABR alumni.
