Draft Coverage: Day 2

With day two coming to a close after 15 rounds, there were yet more USSSA and ABR alumni names seen in the draft.  However, we must first take notice of a few of the 1st round names that were overlooked yesterday in the Day 1 coverage.

The sixth pick overall was Albert Almora.  Almora, a USSSA alumnus, was number one in ABR’s player rankings for 14u back in 2008.  The Cubs believe he has the best baseball instincts in the draft as well as some of the best raw tools.  #39 overall Joey Gallo is a USSSA frequent including tournaments powered by ABR.  The rangers are looking forward for the prodigious power of this young bat.  Steve Bean also went in the first round, #59 overall, by the Cardinals.  The #2 overall pick, Byron Buxton, is said to be the best athlete in the draft.  The Twins’ pick has played a big role in USSSA tournaments.  David Dahl, the 2008 USSSA Elite World Series MVP, went 10th overall to the Rockies.

Additional ABR and USSSA alumni to go on Day 1 of the draft include Anthony Alford and Rio Ruiz.  Alford, who went to the Blue Jays in the 3rd round, was ranked #9 by ABR in 2008.  Rio Ruiz, taken in the 4th round by Houston, was #7 in ABR’s 2008 player rankings. Ruiz is two sport standout who excels at all aspects of the game.  He will retire his pitching career and focus on third base if he signs with the Astros.  The Padres took Andrew Lockett in the 4th round.

2009 USSSA 2nd Team All- American  and 2010 USSSA National Team Member, Ty Buttrey, was taken by the Red Sox in the fourth round.  Buttrey’s biggest asset is his size, comparable to Lucas Giolito.  He is already touching mid 90’s and has as high of a ceiling as anyone.

Wyatt Mathisen, 2010 USSSA All- American and 2011 USSSA National Team Member who traveled to Prague, was taken in the second round by the Pirates.  Wyatt put on an offensive showing at the Prague Baseball Week Tournament in the 2011.  Mathisen is a skilled catcher with a plus arm.  He has an impact bat with the ability to create a lot of back spin.  Mathisen has an advanced approach and swings very well with a wood bat.

2009 USSSA All-American and ABR Player of the Year, Alexis Rivera, was taken in the 10th round by the Royals.  He is an extremely strong and athletic kid.  He is projected to hit for power at the next level with good actions in the field.  Max Foody rounded up day 2 with being taken by the Cardinals in the 12th round.  Foody was a USSSA 1st Team All- American in 2009.  He was slated to travel with the National Team to Japan but had to forgo the trip due to an injury.

Day two looked great for ABR alumni.  Stay tuned for day 3 coverage and for our final analysis of the 2012 First Year MLB Draft.
